From SFRV:
"We end the holiday season with a celebration of Twelfth Night - The Boar's Head - a 650 year old celebration, with the music of Medieval and Renaissance England. Legend has it that a scholar was studying a book of Aristotle while walking through the forest on his way to Midnight Mass. Suddenly, he was confronted by an angry wild boar. Having no other weapon, the resourceful Oxonian rammed his metal-bound philosophy book down the throat of the charging animal, whereupon the brute choked to death. That night the boar's head, finely dressed and garnished, was borne in procession to the dining room, accompanied by carolers singing "in honor of the King of bliss." After the concert, where our audiences will get to sing along, enjoy a feast featuring wassail, king's cake and traditional meat and vegetable pies."

IAGC 2011
2ND INTERNATIONAL Aksit Gokturk CONFERENCE
MYTHS REVISITED
28-29 NOVEMBER 2011
Keynote Speakers:
Marina Warner (English Theoretician and Writer of Fiction)
Murathan Mungan (Turkish Writer of Fiction)
Myths are almost as old as humanity and the aim of this conference is to explore myths in their manifold aspects. In ancient times myths constituted a vital part of art and life and indeed, art and life were closely intertwined and almost inseparable. Drama emerged and developed during the festivals held in honour of Dionysus and classic tragedy commonly revolved around the fate of mythical characters.
Not only on temples and ancient vases or in classical epic literature do we find representations of mythical stories, but throughout the history of art, artists have constantly had recourse to myth. Myth has even served to explain human psychology as in the case of Sigmund Freud and his theory of the Oedipus Complex. A close look at contemporary art reveals that myth still maintains its vital force, because a great number of contemporary artists engage with myths and integrate them into their works.
This inter-disciplinary conference seeks to investigate and explore the nature and significance of myth and its impact on diverse fields of art such as literature, drama, film or painting.
CONFERENCE REGISTRATION FEES WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:

I'm so excited to be collaborating with fellow West Coaster soprano Susan Brownfield www.susanbrownfield.com for this intimate house concert. We met by chance at a concert here in Sofia, Bulgaria, and instantly bonded. She's a gorgeous singer inside and out and we're looking forward to a dynamic presentation of harp & vocal music. Come hear 'chamber music' shared as it was intended - up close and personal.
For reservations and directions, please email me at diana@sirenharp.com - we can only seat about 40, so please RSVP soon!
An exploration through music, art and words of the connections between Ireland's most beloved goddess/saint, Brigid, and her Eastern European counterparts. During our discussion I'll also be sharing music from the Barbara Gallagher's 'Brigid of Kildare Suite' and the visual art of Anna Kallis of Cyprus, along with co-presenter Vladislava Kasnakova of the Museum of Icons, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia, Bulgaria. Sponsored by the Embassy of Ireland, Bulgaria. Free to the public - RSVP to ina.grozdanova@dfa.ie
I'll be talking about and playing excerpts form my PhD research into the compositional methods of traditional and non-pedal harps.
The ancient Celtic harp and sophisticated pedal harp meet in the duo of Sofia Philharmonic principal harpist Vessela Trichkova and acclaimed world music harpist Diana Rowan. After a chance encounter several hours after Diana arrived in Bulgaria for the first time, the pair struck up an instant friendship, fueled by their love of music, travel, sushi and exploration. The idea for a duo concert naturally came out of this energy, and we are delighted to present a wide-ranging programme specially put together for the pillow concert series at Musiclessons. Works will include harp revolutionary Carlos Salzedo's 'Tango & Rumba,' a unique version of Pachelbel's Canon, plus pieces from Celtic lands to the Near East, early music, originals, and improvisations. Prepare to enter a place of deep relaxation, reflection, and rejuvenation - this really is a pillow concert, meaning you'll get to lounge and even lie down during the show!

World Music Journey: Celtic Harps, African Kora & Hindustani Ragas
A Benefit Concert for Tibetan Aid Project
Friday, September 9
Take a musical world journey for a good cause no passports required. Treat your ears to the elegant harp melodies of Diana Stork and Diana Rowan, African Kora by Daniel Berkman, and traditional Hindustani ragas by Teed Rockwell and Peter van Gelder.
Celtic harp duo Diana Stork and Diana Rowan will begin the set with mystical traditional and original works from Celtic to Indian lands. Stork has been well known in the international harp world for over two decades for her eclectic style, which incorporates ethnic, classical and contemporary harp traditions, and Rowan's playing has been described as having unusual power and beauty, based on her native Irish music influenced by constant worldwide travels and research. Daniel Berkman will follow on the African kora, a traditional stringed instrument from West Africa. Berkman has studied kora with various masters and uses a playing technique that draws from myriad influences. Teed Rockwell and Peter van Gelder will conclude with a melodic duo of Hindustani ragas, or classical Hindustani music. Rockwell's deep love for ragas and his extensive studies of the genre has helped him develop a style that honors the deep and
profound nuances of the tradition. Van Gelder was one of the first American disciples of India's great Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, and has studied and taught sitar for many years.
All proceeds will go to Tibetan Aid Project's Tibetan-language book production and distribution project. TAP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping alive the endangered Tibetan culture and language.
Every year, TAP helps fund the production and distribution of thousands of important books to refugee communities throughout Asia, leading not only to cultural preservation but increased literacy.
With so much diverse talent and for such a good cause, this is a journey not to be missed!
Looking forward to gaining much inspiration during my month-long trip to Asia - hoping to find some traditional and experimental Asian harps and harpists too!

Every December, California Revels produces, “The Christmas Revels,” a joyous production welcoming the return of the light back from the darkness of winter. Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer, California Revels late Founder, claimed that many people celebrate the Solstice without realizing it. Decorating homes with lights for midwinter, for example, is an ancient ritual for “calling back the light” that predates Christmas by centuries. “The Winter Solstice falls on the shortest day and brings on the longest night of the year. Across the centuries, people have chosen this time to acknowledge and celebrate the cycle of light and darkness, good and evil, life and death, that governs all our lives.”
Come and enjoy an afternoon of festive holiday harp music at our twelfth annual concert!
Bay Area Holiday Harp Concert Ensemble
The program will include a seasonal selection of traditional carols, classical music, and a variety of holiday music. We will feature harp solos and ensembles, including our trademark studio ensemble of more than twenty harps, and Paul Rosas on the spectacular LAUMC organ.
We are also pleased to present this year’s featured artist, Diana Rowan. As the daughter of an Irish Diplomat, Diana spent her youth traveling from one location to another, and it was during her years spent living in Iraq and on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus that her she developed love for Balkan, Eastern European, Sephardic and Middle Eastern music. She eventually settled in Berkeley, and earned her Master of Music degree in piano performance from Holy Names College. Diana first heard a harp being played while attending a Kitka concert, and she knew she had finally found an instrument that would allow her to combine her love of poetry and mythology with her love of world music.
Today, Diana primarily spends her time performing as a solo harpist, and working with such luminaries as Deepak Ram, Diana Stork and oud player Yuval Ron. You can learn more about Diana Rowan and her music on her website at www.sirenharp.com.
The concert will take place on Saturday, December 4, 2010, 4:00 p.m. at Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Avenue, Los Altos, California.
Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for children (4–12) and $12 for seniors (60+). For more information and to buy tickets, please contact Stephanie at (408) 366-8810 or email events@harpeggio.com
The holiday popularly known as Halloween is the time of year known to witches as Samhain, when the veil is thin between the worlds of the living and the dead. We gather to remember and honor our ancestors, our Beloved Dead, and all those who have crossed over. As we mourn for those we love who have died this year, we also mourn the losses and pain suffered by the Earth, our Mother. Yet even as we grieve we also remember and honor the sacred cycle of life, death, rebirth and regeneration, celebrating the births of our children born this year, and our own vital connections to the Earth and each other, in which we ground our hope.
The first Spiral Dance ritual was held in 1979 to celebrate the publication of Starhawk’s book, The Spiral Dance (Harper and Row) Starhawk, a founding member of the Reclaiming Collective, wrote the original script which remains the heart of the ritual, though it has been altered and embellished over the years by her and many other people. Traditionally, the Spiral Dance calls upon the energy and talents of musicians, artists, poets, dancers, crafts people, singers, technicians, priests and priestesses from the Reclaiming Community and beyond, and we are grateful to everyone who helps to create this magical experience we all share.
This is a participatory ritual and pageant which has become a central event in the Wheel of the Year for many in the Reclaiming Community and beyond. Over 1,200 people join in this observance of the Witches’ New year, and the event raises funds which support the work of Reclaiming throughout the year.
When we dance the Spiral, young and old together, we remember and honor our own past at that same time that we renew our vision and embrace the future. Let it begin now!

This is what The Freight website says:
Come help blow out the candles and hear some truly fabulous music as Shay Black celebrates his birthday with a host of amazing musicians on our stage tonight! Establishing a close rapport with his audiences, Shay throws plenty of Irish humor and an irresistibly warm stage presence into a mix of traditional and humorous songs. He always welcomes audience participation, and his unalloyed joy in singing make it difficult for anyone to remain a spectator for long!
Tonight Shay is joined by artists he has sung and played with over the years, including the Solstice Ensemble from California Revels, multi-instrumentalist and early music multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Shira Kammen, harpist Diana Rowan, sacred song artist Evelie Delfino Såles Posch and the Spiral Dance Chorus, the illustrious a cappella trio Oak Ash & Thorn, Dogwatch Nautical Band, and maritime balladeer and concertina player Skip Henderson.
Just to add to the evening's general fabulousness, Shay is also joined by the Black Brothers' band (with Michael Black, Bobbi Shearn Nikles on fiddle, pianist Bryan Seet, and cellist Myra Joy) plus a top-secret lineup of surprise guests.
An avid songcatcher, musician, teacher, and singer, Dublin-born Shay is the eldest member of Ireland's Black Family, who are "regarded as one of the most impressive groups of Irish singers to be found anywhere" (The Irish Echo). He has toured and recorded with the Irish band Garva, the illustrious Stan Hugill, and the fabled sea shanty group Stormalong John. Shay's most regular local gigs these days are the weekly "Starry Irish Music Session" at The Starry Plough pub and the hugely popular "Folk Song Repertoire" class he teaches at The Freight. Shay tours regularly with his brother Michael as The Black Brothers, and when time permits, with siblings Martin, Frances and Mary Black as The Black Family.
Shay works on the management team of local non-profit Family Paths, a family support agency based in Oakland; tonight's show is a benefit for Family Paths, Inc.

Take Your Harp Technique to the Next Level
Instructor: Diana Rowan
Sat., July 3, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., $35 ($60 for both of this instructor’s workshops).
Learn straightforward yet rarely-taught techniques that will help you find it easier to play your current repertoire and encourage you to try more challenging pieces as well! Discover the most effortless and secure way to sit at your harp, what the three directions of projection are and why they allow such dramatic changes in tone, the truth behind the optical illusion that harp playing appears circular (but actually works in straight lines for optimal dynamic and rhythmic control), and why thumb position is the key to everything.

Bring the Harp Back to its Roots
Instructor: Diana Rowan
Sat., July 3, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., $35 ($60 for both of this instructor’s workshops).
Explore the exotic scales and rhythms of the Near and Middle East on the harp. A 5,000-year-old harp was found in present-day Iraq, and harp features prominently in music from Turkey to Persia. Discover how Eastern approaches to color and rhythm can enrich your current repertoire or take you on new musical journeys altogether! Among others, explore Hijaz, a scale that is a hallmark of haunting Sephardic and flamenco music, and Maqsum, a driving rhythmic pattern beloved by bellydancers to balladeers.

Quinteto Del Bailongo: A chance encounter between five musicians in the dance halls of the San Francisco tango scene and a quintet is born. Yes, all five members are active social dancers and a random discussion about tango music led them to discover each others background in music. Diana Rowan (piano) and Mayumi Urgino (violin) both hold degrees in piano performance and Julian Ramil (bandoneon) has a degree in guitar performance. Jesse Ramada (guitar) and Glenn Corteza (bass) got their training in the field playing with different ensembles starting at an early age. The quintet is inspired by the music and artistry of Astor Piazzolla and thus dedicates their time to playing his compositions.
